Privileges of War

Compelled to serve his country at a difficult time in its history, Tom Ross left a carefree college life behind to volunteer for service in South Vietnam.

After being commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, he applied to and was accept by the US Army Special Forces, the elite military unit also known as the "Green Berets."

As a military advisor, Tom worked with every branch of the US military and served as a key advisor to the Vietnamese Camp Commander. In this role, he witnessed countless acts of selflessness and courage by American men and women. Some of those inspirational stories are shared in his book.

Oddly, Tom went to Vietnam hoping to accomplish something meaningful with his time there. But as the end of his tour of duty approached, that hope had virtually dissolved. Then, unexpectedly, he was given the opportunity for which he had hoped when three primative but courageous mountain villages escaped their VC and NVA captors. After finding an allied outpost and were led to Tom. They explained to him that their entire village had been enslaved for years and they had suffered terrible abuse. The men begged for help in freeing their village.

In response to the villagers' plea, Tom and those who would follow him risked the ultimate in their effort to free families held as slaves in — The Valley of the Tigers.
