Looking North Northeast - Combat support facilities, the Nha Trang Air Base, and a portion of Nha Trang City

Internal security of the Nha Trang Air Base was the other portion of A-502's original assignment.  Ultimately, the team was given responsibility for defense of the entire Nha Trang City area.  This was a tremendous responsibility and marked the beginning of A-502's growth.  Welcoming its new assignment, the team created outposts throughout its new area of operation.

5th Special Forces Group Main Gate

This was the portal through which many fine American Special Forces soldiers would pass.

5th Special Forces Group Headquarters located in Nha Trang, Republic of South Vietnam.

It was from this location that Special Forces teams and team members would be dispatched to all parts of the country.  A-502 was originally given the responsibility for the internal security of this headquarters and the other buildings within its compound.  This responsibility was considered a high honor and Arthur Fields, A-502's first Team Sergeant, equated this assignment to that of palace guards. The only significant difference was that the team's uniforms weren't as flashy as those of real palace guards.

Icecream Shop at 5th Special Forces Group Headquarters.

The command at 5th Group went out of the way to provide a taste of home.  When there was time, you could have an icecream cone for 10 cents, a sunday for 30 cents, or a bananna split for 55 cents.
