It seemed appropriate to open the Photo Gallery with this picture taken from just north of Camp Trung Dung in the Song Cai River wash area.  The jumper is one of A-502's advisors, 1st Lieutenant William C. (Bill) Phalen.  This was a refresher training jump for the unit to which Lieutenant Phalen was the senior U.S. advisor.  The photograph was taken circa June 1968.

While airborne insertions were rare in Vietnam, the team maintained a training schedule in order to be prepared for any assignment . . . regardless of how rare or unusual it might be.

Aside from training, the chance to jump from a perfectly functioning aircraft was a rarely passed opportunity for Special Forces soldiers who were trained to jump from both low altitude and high altitude as well as from everything from helicopters to jets.>
